🧐 This Time It's Different

GM Everyone,

Everywhere you look right now, people are talking about cannabis. It was front and center on Bill Maher, Fox News has been running shockingly positive coverage on the topic, and hopefully we can get some rhetoric at the RFK hearing tomorrow. We’ve been here before, however, so don’t you dare say, “this time it’s different.”

It could be but its not until we have action.

A little more than a 7 minute read.

💸 The Tape

Florida’s cannabis showdown is back on center stage, folks—and this time, homegrown weed could headline the festivities. Picture it: you’re a medical marijuana patient in the Sunshine State, and you’ve got the green light to grow up to two personal pot plants right in your living room. Under SB 334, filed by Sen. Joe Gruters, that horticultural fantasy could soon become reality, Governor DeSantis can now rejoice. No letting your neighbors ogle your little shrubs from the street—or from their drones for that matter—and keep those buds tucked safely behind locked doors. Sorry, roommate patients: the bill limits each household to two total plants, meaning no horticultural free-for-all if multiple patients share the same address.

Meanwhile, if you’re a renter, fret not—you can join the party too, but only if your landlord is cool with it and will hand you some notarized permission. A note of caution, though: if you ignore the rules, you’re looking at a first-degree misdemeanor. That means a potential year of jail time, a $1,000 fine, and some quality probation. Let’s just say the consequences are a bit steeper than forgetting to pay your Netflix subscription.

Of course, this legislative spectacle wouldn’t be complete without a little hemp drama. SB 334 also aims to corral Florida’s hemp industry by setting strict THC limits (two milligrams per serving) and banning certain variants like delta-8 and THCA. Remember Gov. Ron DeSantis’s veto last year that left hemp fans in a tizzy? Turns out he wasn’t just grandstanding. The new proposal essentially gives the hemp sector a pre-flight checklist: no snazzy kid-friendly packaging, no bold “THC Sold Here” signs, and definitely no hemp you can puff on.

If the Legislature gets it right this time around, we may see a regulatory framework that tames the hemp free-for-all while giving medical marijuana patients their own mini grow operation. But if it all goes sideways again, expect more vetoes, more lawsuits, and more pot entrepreneurs left in limbo. As any seasoned investor knows, a little market turbulence can be thrilling—just make sure you’re not on the losing end when the smoke clears. In Florida, the odds of clear skies or another squall are about 50-50, so keep your eyes on Tallahassee and your green thumb at the ready.

Who Is Cannara Biotech?

Consider Cannara Biotech’s Q1 2025 a cannabis harvest with a flourish: net revenue soared 29% to $25.1 million, new market share reached 4.1%, and adjusted EBITDA blossomed by 16% to $6.0 million. The secret sauce? Expanded production capacity, lower costs, and unstoppable demand for premium buds. Operating and free cash flows also surged, signaling a balanced budget approach to cultivation. Sure, net income dipped from Q4 2024’s high, but blame that on fewer fair value gains (buzzy stuff). Meanwhile, management’s doubling down with two new grow zones and 20-plus fresh products, all locked and loaded for 2025. With these results, Cannara Biotech is climbing higher than your average greenhouse—and shareholders are happily along for the ride.

Republicans Are Getting It Wrong

Matt Gaetz, the ex-congressman once tapped by Trump for attorney general, declined Bill Maher’s cannabis hospitality but delivered a reality check: the GOP is losing ground on marijuana reform. On Maher's podcast, Gaetz reminded everyone he's no stranger to the weed debate, having championed medical marijuana in Florida and supported federal legalization bills in Congress. Meanwhile, Republicans remain stubbornly risk-averse, ignoring bipartisan polling data. The ex-lawmaker singled out his party’s stance on cannabis, climate, and surveillance as strategic misfires. Gaetz’s attorney general prospects fizzled—Pam Bondi got the nod—but cannabis advocates had hoped his legal know-how might fuel major reforms. Like an undervalued stock, marijuana reform remains poised for a bullish turn if the GOP ever buys in.
